Connect an AI provider

Waiso does not ship a language model of its own. Every AI feature — the assistant beside your code, the flow assistant, the e-mail assistant and the AI Scraper — answers through an AI provider connection: your own account with Anthropic, OpenAI or Google, billed to you by them. Connect one per project, and each chat lets you choose which model it uses.

What you will learn
  • Connect an AI provider with an API key
  • Know which features need it and what they say without one
  • Choose the model each chat uses with the model picker

Your account, your models

An AI provider connection holds two things: which company answers and your API key with it. It does not fix a model — the model is chosen on each screen that talks to the AI, so the editor assistant can run a fast, cheap model while the scraper builder runs a stronger one, both on the same key.

hello.py
1def main(name: str = "world", shout: bool = False):2    text = f"Hello, {name}!"3    return {"message": text}
Python 3.15LSP
AI chat31
Upper-case the message when shout is true.

One change in main: when shout is true, the text is upper-cased before it is returned.

Current scriptSuggestion
text = f"Hello, {name}!"+ if shout:+ text = text.upper() return {"message": text}

The key becomes a secret variable like any other connection credential: a connection named claude stores it as AI_CLAUDE_API_KEY. It cannot be read back after saving, only replaced.

Connect one

  1. Pick AI provider

    On Integrations, click Add integration and choose AI provider in the Services group.

  2. Choose the company and paste the key

    Give it a Name (for example claude), pick the Provider — each row says Get a key at … — and paste the API key.

  3. Save and test

    Save connection, confirm the variable name, then open it again: the Model block lists the models your account can run, the default marked Default. Test connection sends one tiny request to check the key — it costs about nothing on your account.

What uses it

  • The editor assistant — the AI chat side tab of the script editor, and its Fix with AI on a failed run.
  • The flow assistant — the flow page’s AI chat, which reads your flow and proposes changes you review on the canvas.
  • The e-mail assistant in the template studio of the E-mail page.
  • The AI Scraper builder: it plans the scraper and writes its program with your model. Published scrapers then run with no AI at all.

Without a connection these places do not break — they tell you. The scrapers page shows Connect an AI provider to use scrapers with Connect a provider, which opens the dialog already on AI provider; an assistant request answers needs_ai_provider.

The verifier

The provider list also offers TypeSafe Jev, marked Verifier: a decision model that judges whether a finished scraper build answered the request. It never plans or chats, so it never appears in the model picker, and a project holds at most one.

Choose the model

Every AI chat carries a model picker showing provider · model. Click it (Change the model), search with Search models… and pick; the model in use is pinned at the top under In use, and each model wears a rough cost band — $ the cheapest tier, $$ a mid tier, $$$ the most expensive. With more than one AI connection in the project, the picker first asks for the Connection, then the Model.

The choice is saved for the project and that screen — the editor assistant, the flow assistant, the e-mail assistant and the scraper chat each keep their own — so your team shares it. Until a choice exists, a project with a single connection uses that connection’s default model.

Costs and limits

  • Every AI call is billed by the provider to the account whose key you saved — not by Waiso, and not in credits.
  • If the account’s model list cannot be read, the picker offers only the default: “The models on this account could not be read, so only the default is offered.”
  • Your scripts cannot call the AI provider themselves: user code runs with no network access. Use the assistants while you build.
